Senior Biology Excursion

From the 16th to 18th May Senior Biology students attended an excursion to Magnetic Island where they studied the biodiversity of several beach and marine habitats. Students took part in a lecture session with Dr Andy Lewis, a marine biologist who has an education based ecotourism business that provides people with an idea about the impacts of human activity on the reef ecosystems. They then snorkelled over a section of impacted reef in Florence Bay to observe the number and diversity of species recolonising that area after a significant bleaching event in 2007. Students are continuing their investigations back at school with their own experimental investigations on the impacts of chemicals and pollutants on the natural invertebrate fauna of the island.
